Frequently Asked Questions

Plywood is a type of engineered wood made by gluing together thin layers (or plies) of wood veneer, with the grain of each layer running in alternating directions. This makes it strong, durable, and versatile for construction and furniture projects.

Plywood Thickness Availability:

Plywood is available in various thicknesses, typically ranging from:

  • 1/8" (3mm)
  • 1/4" (6mm)
  • 1/2" (12mm)
  • 3/4" (18mm)
  • 1" (25mm)

These thicknesses are commonly used for furniture and construction applications.

Consider These Factors:

  • Strength: Use thicker plywood for structural projects and thinner plywood for decorative or less load-bearing tasks.
  • Finish: Choose higher-grade plywood for visible parts of furniture and lower-grade for hidden sections like subflooring.
  • Environment: If the plywood will be exposed to moisture, use marine plywood or film-faced plywood.

MDF vs. Plywood

MDF (Medium Density Fiberboard): Made from wood fibers compressed into a smooth board. It’s dense, smooth, and ideal for painting but isn’t as strong as plywood.

Plywood: Composed of layers of wood veneers that provide superior strength and flexibility, making it better suited for structural uses.

How to Finish Plywood:

  • Sand it smooth to remove any rough edges.
  • Apply a stain or wood finish for aesthetic purposes.
  • Use a polyurethane or lacquer finish to protect it from moisture or damage.
  • For outdoor use, treat it with a weather-resistant coating.

Plywood can be considered relatively eco-friendly, especially when sourced from sustainably managed forests. Look for certifications such as FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) to ensure responsible production.

Plywood can be used outdoors if treated properly. For outdoor applications, opt for marine plywood or plywood with water-resistant treatments. You may also need to seal it to prevent moisture damage.
